We currently live in Orlando, FL which Google Maps tells me is 2,359 miles from our old house in Henderson, NV outside of Las Vegas. That is by far the biggest move I've made in my life.

We moved to the Las Vegas area because prior to 9-11-2001 the town was booming. Not just from tourism, but it was also experiencing the beginnings of the housing bubble and some overflow from the dot-com bubble. In our industries we thought work would be plenty, living would be easy, and we would raise our happy family in suburban bliss.

Unfortunately, that fairy tale had a nightmare ending. The one bright spot is that we managed to sell before the housing bubble burst so our transition east to Orlando was made easier.

Why Orlando? We'll we wanted to be close to a Disney theme park. We couldn't afford to live in Southern California in the lifestyle we wanted. We didn't want to learn Japanese or French, so that left Orlando.

All in all it's been a pretty good choice for us. We have a good neighborhood, good schools, I love my job, and we've found some old friends and made some new ones. Do I miss being able to drive to Disneyland on a whim. Sure. But I don't miss Las Vegas and I don't miss SoCal traffic. Ask me again in three years.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. After hosting Turkey Day and Hanukkah, we've decided to take it easy for Christmas (yes, Indigo is one of those lucky kids that celebrates both). It is really a weird year for us, we still haven't even decorated the tree. That will be tomorrow. We have all the shopping done, but still haven't sent out Christmas cards. Now we need to find a restaurant that will be open on Tuesday that isn't a buffet and won't break our budget. Wish us luck.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday themselves and that all your Christmas dreams come true.

Living in Central Florida for the last few years has been a treat. We chose to live in the Hunters Creek development due to its proximity to the attractions area and the general lack of difficulty in getting to most place in the Orlando area. Still, we're fairly isolated from anything in the Downtown area or northward. Since that is where most of the cultural and sports attractions are, we miss out on most of that as well. Then there are the mass-transit rail line routes that are pretty much north of us as well.

That's not to say things are boring down here around the Hunters Creek development but I don't feel any central planning going on either. The area south of the Central Florida Parkway and north of the 192 Hwy is growing and changing, but lacks any real
planning. That might be because the region straddles two counties.

Despite the lack of planning the region is gaining an identity centered around The Loop (such as that is architectural wise). So far, there are no areas where little boutiques can set up shop or art galleries can prosper. Plus, The Loop isn't very inspiring as a community name. I don't think we should call it Hunters Creek since there is already some push back on that and the area does stretch much farther south.

So I'm voting we adopt the name "SoNo" as the first step to self-identify the area. The name SoNo comes from where South Orange County meets North Osceola County (SocNoc sounded like a High School Dance). It's more than Kissimmee-St. Cloud since it includes the Hunters Creek area (and parts northward) and excludes much of the tourist strip part of Kissimmee. The Loop is at its approximate center with John Young Parkway marking the North-South axis and Osceola Parkway marking the East-West route.

What do you think? Abandon all hope ye who live there, or is there something we can do about it? If you think we can make something of this area, let's start with a name - SoNo. What do you say?

More than any other figure from my youth, I wanted to be Evel Knievel. Well, Portland Trailblazer star center Bill Walton was my first choice, but I quickly figured that I would never grow to be 7 feet tall. Knievel's exploits as a daredevil and stuntman in the 1970s corresponded with the carefree days of my youth. I had the toys, the collectors cards, the comic book, the lunch box. I never missed a broadcast of one of his stunts.

At home I would race down the hall with a cape and pretend to jump my motorcycle over my toy busses just like Knievel. At times I would crash and burn, but thankfully, my falls never resulted in a single broken bone. Knievel was said to have broken every one of his. Each of his spectacular jumps was like taking a mortgage out on the rest of his life. So the fact that he made it to 69 must have seemed like a gift to him and his family. That's not to say his death was welcome. No, he deserved a long healthy life like everyone. But we all make our choices.

Of late, Knievel was known for his run in with hiphop star Kanye West. A lawsuit was settled just a few days ago. Both were quoted to be quite chummy with each other. Sad to think that's how many of todays youth will know of Knievel's exploits.

Here's a great story I heard about Knievel concerning the ultimate stunt of jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. Knievel said he had figured out how to do it and survive. It would have to be over the grand canyon, or similar area with a high cliff. The stunt would be to fall in parabolic swings that would result in moments of weightlessness at the top of each side of the swing before you fell back down again. At that moment, your effective momentum would be zero. If you could time the last of your swings to dip you into the grand canyon and end with you just above the rim of the highest cliff, then you could just fall down onto a well placed cushion of straw and literally walk away from the scene. Now that's the ultimate stunt.

Just a few years ago when a Knievel themed restaurant was scheduled to open up outside of Las Vegas, I thrilled over seeing the few bits of memorabilia that were on display in the preview window and possibly meeting my childhood idol at the grand opening. Knievel won't get to see that restaurant now, should it ever be built. But I hope his spirit and desire for the thrill of the dare will continue to inspire people to push their own limits.

Evel Knievel, (real name Robert Craig Knievel Jr) off to ride final the rocket to the sky, at 69.

(Photo of Evel Knievel and Kanye West courtesy of user brandawg via flickr creative commons license)

Is anyone as disappointed by the complete dominance of just a few teams in the NFL and the unwillingness or inability of some owners to acquire real talent? It has made for many unwatchable games the last few seasons. We know Tom Brady is amazing. But do we have to watch him score 52 points on an opponent week after week to know that.

What this tells me is that the National Football League is in a rut. They don't seem to be able to get themselves out of it either. So perhaps a little competition will do the job instead. That's why I'm excited about the prospects for the United Football League.

Things over in the UFL seem to be coming together. The UFL Live blog is the best source of news on the new league I've found and there have been a few great reveals just this week. For instance, there is a fan vote to see which cities are the first 8 to get teams. Final cities and team owners should be announced in Mid-December. There will probably be another fan vote to Coaches and staff will be hired in January and the first draft will be in March.

In addition to the draft, the talent pool will draw on players with previous NFL experience and probably some of the players from the recently shuttered NFL Europe league. There will be a training camp and pre-season just like a real football league (which should prevent the slow start that hurt the XFL). With the games to be played on Friday nights starting sometime in August and running until a championship match played before the Holiday seasons gets under way.

The league won't be under capitalized nor is it going to rely on TV revenue to start. Plans are to have each team financed enough to last three-seasons, or long enough to build a fan base and possibly expand to 12 or 16 teams if the league is doing well enough. Plus starting out by putting teams in cities where the NFL is currently ignoring is going to help rapidly build that fan base and TV coverage (since there won't be overlap with NFL teams).

What I'm liking best about the UFL are the plans to involve the fans. Not just as co-owners as part of an IPO, but online access to team business, locker rooms, practices, player blogs, etc. It will be nice to a league actually embrace its fans rather than hold them at arms length like the NFL.

What are some of the things you would like to see from the UFL as a fan of football

I'm going to have to go with #7 in the draft Adrian Peterson from Oklahoma (although as an Oregon Duck fan it pains me to say that). 1-6 haven't made much of a splash and Peterson is helping the Vikings stay competitive in the league. Sort of like Reggie Bush and the NOS last season, but without all the hype.

I've downloaded and installed the Mahalo Follow plug in for Firefox and have been using it for a week or so. But I think I'll have to disable the extension until a few basic changes are made. Most importantly, you should be able to right-click the Mahalo Follow (MF) results and have them open in a new tab. If they replace the currently open tab, I have to go through a whole rigamarol to get back to my original content (I'm not always in the 'search results' when I click on the Mahalo sidebar link).

The "open all' button does use new tabs. Perhaps adding an 'open checked' feature would work too.

Secondly, I really don't like how once I've closed the sidebar, it reopens everytime I hit 'next page' on the google search (specifically the News search in this case, don't know if it does it in other cases). Once I close MF after an initial search, it should remain closed until I enter a new search term.

Lastly, I'd love for the option to have each subsection collapsible, so I don't have to scroll to find the heading I want. Then I can click to see just the links that are important to me. Hopefully every topic heading would be above the fold this way. Right now I have to scroll to see if there is something I'm missing.

Other than that, I've found it a good product. I use it about 10-20% of the time I do a search on a term that Mahalo has in its system. It's easy enough to close when it's not needed. Even if I turn off Mahalo Follow, The Firefox search engine plug-in will still find some use. Now where is that Mahalo Ombudsman?
